China resists mounting pressure to do more on climate change
Washington Post By Christian Shepherd, Maxine Joselow
With less than a month before the annual U.N. Climate Change Conference, China is so far defying pressure to set ambitious climate targets early and to do more to help poor nations cope with the ravages of a warming world. The United States, other Western countries and some low-lying island nations have been pressing China to take on more responsibility in advancing global climate goals ahead of the conference, according to some veteran climate negotiators and leading Chinese experts.
'Ghost forests' studied in new research on climate change impacts
USA Today By Doyle Riceย
Just in time for Halloween, federal scientists this week announced new research into so-called "ghost forests," spooky tracts of dead trees common along the Eastern Seaboard. According to NOAA, they are "theย watery remainsย of a once verdant woodland." The new research suggests the deathly landscapes are home to tiny organisms that play a fascinating role in climate change.
Climate Change Can Take Big Toll on Asian Economies, Inaction Could Cost More, ADB Report Says
Wall Street Journal By Fabiana Negrin Ochoa, Amanda Leeย
โThe window to stay within the 1.5ยฐC target of the Paris Agreement is rapidly closing,โ the ADB said. The international treaty aims to limit the average rise in global temperatures to that threshold, beyond which experts expect climate change to have increasingly disastrous consequences. In the nine years since the agreement was adopted, inaction has put that goal nearly out of reach, the multilateral bank said.
Climate Change Is Making Disasters Deadlier. Here's How Much.
NY Times By Austyn Gaffney
Two weeks before world leaders meet to debate the climate crisis, a report released on Thursday shows the 10 deadliest extreme weather events in the past two decades were made worse by burning fossil fuels. More than half a million people around the world were killed in those disasters since 2004.
Spainโs deadly floods and severe droughts are two faces of the climate change coin
The Guardian By Ajit Niranjanย
Residents of Chiva, a small town on the outskirts of Valencia, can expect a grim future of worsening drought as the planet heats up and the country dries out. But on Tuesday, they also witnessed a yearโs worth of rainfall in a matter of hours. The torrential rains that flooded southern and eastern Spain last night, ripping away bridges and tearing through towns, have killed 64 people and counting.
The Guardian By Graham Readfearnย
โIt is a wicked problem,โ says Dr Karl Braganza at the Bureau of Meteorology, after running through Australiaโs latest State of the Climate report. The effects of rising heat on land and in the oceans, coupled with rising greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, are changing Australiaโs climate rapidly and โflowing through to how our society, economy and other things operateโ.

People Power Unitedโs Statement on Protect Our Planet
In response to recent MAGA shenanigans to enact Project 2025 and harm our environment, People Power United - a progressive grassroots group - issued the following statement:
โOur planet is under attack as the MAGA agenda seeks to reward the rich and powerful at the expense of our environment. Climate change poses an urgent and immediate danger to our environment, our planet, and the very future of life on Earth. We must stand strong in the face of these threats and take action to educate and empower our communities. Together, we can protect our environment, preserve the beauty and biodiversity of our planet, and ensure a sustainable future for all. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities againstย any and allย injustices,โ said Laurie Woodward Garcรญa of People Power United.
People Power United will continue to oppose such harm to our community and champion civil rights for all.
Join us to build People Power! Together, we can champion our rights, freedoms, and democracy, hold our leaders accountable to the people's will, and inspire voters to make a meaningful difference.
